Introduction to safety skills and first aid necessary to prepare students for staying safe when unsupervised and home alone

Safe@Home

Safe@Home is an in-person program designed for students in grades 4-6 to help prepare them to be safe when they are home alone. The program teaches students how to practice safe habits, how to prevent unsafe situations, and what to do when faced with dangers such as power failures or weather emergencies. Students are also introduced to the Safe Sitter® First Aid Chart and learn a system to help them assess and respond to injuries and illnesses. Each student will receive a Safe@Home student booklet to take home.

FAQs

Safe@Home is an introductory course meant for small groups and is designed to be facilitated by any adult that enjoys teaching preteens and being a role model. In addition, Safe@Home is an introduction to safety skills and first aid necessary to prepare students for the responsibility of staying safe when unsupervised. However, Safe@Home does not include instruction on rescue skills, child care skills, or business skills.

Safe@Home provides excellent instruction on staying safe inside the house, outside the house, online, and with others. However, preteens mature at their own pace and parents need to make sure they’re ready for the responsibility. To help you determine if your child is ready, read Home Alone: 5 Questions To Ask Before  You Let Your Kids Stay Home Alone.

There is no age that students are automatically ready to stay home alone. Staying home alone is a big responsibility, and all preteens need maturity and confidence to take on that responsibility. They also need to be comfortable with the idea of being home unsupervised. Finally, it is important that parents agree their child is ready to take on this responsibility and be available to support them as needed.
